How to choose a roofer in Texas

Texas does not issue a statewide roofing contractor license. That makes your own checks — and ours — more important.

Why “licensed roofer” is confusing in Texas

Unlike some states, Texas has no state roofing license. Cities and counties may still require building permits, registrations, or trade licenses for related work. Always confirm what your city or county requires for a tear-off or replacement.

Checks that matter

  • General liability insurance — ask for a current certificate; call the insurer if needed.
  • Workers’ compensation or equivalent — ask how the crew is covered.
  • Business registration — confirm an active Texas entity that matches the name on the contract.
  • Local presence — a physical Texas address and a working phone beat a PO box and a door hanger.
  • Public reputation — read recent Google/BBB history for patterns, not just star averages.
  • Written scope and warranty — materials, tear-off, underlayment, timeline, payment schedule, and manufacturer warranties in writing.
  • Permits — who pulls them, and who calls for inspection.

Texas consumer protections to know

Contractors generally may not waive or rebate your insurance deductible (Business & Commerce Code § 27.02) and may not act as your public insurance adjuster. After storms, be wary of high-pressure door-to-door offers. The TDI roofing & insurance page is a solid official summary.

How Dallas Roof Match vets partners

Before a roofer receives leads, we check insurance on file, Texas business registration, local presence, and public review history. Applications start as Pending; we do not auto-approve. Insurance expiry pauses rotation. Vetting reduces risk but is not a guarantee of workmanship — you still review the contract and decide whether to hire.
